奥州藤原氏の都・平泉の黄金文化を支えたとも伝えられる鹿折金山。明治時代には国内十大金山の一つに数えられ、日本の近代化に貢献しました。明治37年に採掘された後、米国セントルイス万国博覧会に出展、称賛された“モンスターゴールド”は重さ約2.25kg、金含有量約83％の怪物金でした。平成24年10月にリニューアルオープンした資料館では、この巨大な金塊の写真のほか、当時の金鉱石、工具、文献などを展示、金山の歴史の一端を紹介しています。
