平泉の中尊寺、山寺の立石寺と並んで東北三灯と呼ばれる天台宗別格本山。比叡山の末寺として、全国7寺しかない「不滅の法灯」を受け継いでいます。観音像を納める厨子は享保8年（1723年）の建築。平面が「凸」字形をなし、4室を備えるなど、繊細な建築様式に加えて、黒漆を主調とし、朱色、金色を取り交ぜた彩色と意匠も華麗。平泉文化を今に伝える木造阿弥陀如来坐像（平安時代末期の作品と推定）とともに、宮城県の有形文化財に指定されています。
