平成5年、柳田国男文学碑建立実行委員会によって建立されました。大正9年、東北地方を調査旅行した民俗学者・柳田國男は当時の唐桑村（現・気仙沼市唐桑町）を訪ねました。この旅行をまとめた著書「雪国の春」には、明治29年の三陸大津波の惨状が克明に記されています。文学碑には、「雪国の春」の一節が碑文として刻まれており、当時の被害の大きさ、痛ましさ、悲しみを今に伝えています。
